Trumpeter Terry takes grade 3!
Terry born in Northfield and growing up in the west midlands has been a keen musician all his life. Since 8 years old Terry always had an ambition to play the bugle but didn’t start playing the trumpet until the age of 68! Terry was initially teaching himself but later taught by two ladies from a local organisation who supported him taking grade 1 and 2 trumpet.
Unfortunately due to family illness, Terry stopped playing for a number of years until February 2022 aged 85 when he was able to recommence playing trumpet with Wendy and aural training with Sue, both of whom are retired SIPS Music and Arts teachers. Both Wendy and Sue worked for the service for many years delivering music tuition in schools across Sandwell, influencing and inspiring many children particularly through music curriculum. Wendy and Sue said ‘we are so proud of Terry and he’s an absolute joy to teach’.
Since returning to the trumpet, 12 months on Terry was ready for grade 3. For this examination Terry took one of SIPS Music and Arts internal assessments. Ahead of the exam he received a mock exam with brass specialist Ann Reeves gaining some extra pointers, tips and encouragement before taking the exam a few weeks later. Ann said ‘Terry clearly enjoys playing the trumpet, played really well and wishes him every success in his future playing’. Terry was later examined by Instrumental lead Jonathan Beer, passing with Merit.
It has been a privileged for SIPS Music and Arts to support and encourage in this way and we wish Terry all the very best as he continues to make music.
It’s never too late to learn OR achieve your dream!
